On Thursday, Twitter, the microblogging platform, blocked all accounts related to Afghanistan’s temporary President, Amrullah Saleh, causing considerable development worldwide. Due to this activity, Twitter has suspended the official handles of the Afghan President, @Afghanpresident, and Afghanistan Green Trend, @AfgGreenTrend.
The development continues as Saleh consolidates power in Afghanistan to oppose the Taliban’s takeover. The guardian President is being held in Panjshir, which is dangerously close to slipping into Taliban hands.
It’s worth noting that, while Twitter has suspended accounts linked to Saleh, the Taliban’s spokesperson account is still live. In reality, the Twitter accounts of multiple Taliban commanders are visible. Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman who constantly updates his Twitter account with the newest news, has over 300,000 followers. Spokesperson Suhail Shaheen has almost 300,000 followers, while Qari Yousaf Ahmadi has a following of 60,000.
The majority of social media and internet behemoths, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok, have banned the Taliban and its sympathisers from using their platforms. On the other hand, Twitter has made a determined effort to avoid taking immediate action against the attackers. According to the statement, the Taliban’s accounts are being closely monitored, and if they “step over the line,” action would be taken against the Jihadi group.
Except for Twitter, Facebook has taken a strong stance against the Taliban, prohibiting the Islamist fundamentalist group and its affiliates from accessing the social media network. According to a PTI report, the company stated in a declaration that it considers the organisation as “a fear-based oppressor organisation,” according to a PTI report. The company organised a dedicated group of Afghan professionals to screen and destroy anything related to the dissident group.
