Amazon has announced Doug Harrington as the new CEO of its worldwide retail division. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the news in a blog post. She described him as a ‘curious person and an ardent learner. Someone who thinks large has a thoughtful vision about how category management and ops can work effectively together.’

The development came a few weeks after the previous CEO, Dave Clark, announced his impending resignation. Herrington, who will now work for the Worldwide Amazon Stores business, formerly known as Amazon’s Consumer business, was part of Amazon’s North American Consumer division. He was in charge of the division for 17 years until 2017.

According to Jessy’s email, the portfolio of Doug Herrington includes building Amazon’s Consumables business after joining it in 2015. He launched AmazonFresh in 2007. He took over his previous role to lead all of the company’s North American Consumer business.

Talking about Amazon’s further operations Jassy said that the company will consolidate its operations division under the leadership of John Felton, a seasoned executive who will now answer to Herrington.

Amazon’s rough road- roadblocks for Herrington

However there is a rough path ahead for Herrington. Amazon’s growth slowed during the pandemic and the company’s CEO has been struggling with the problems attached to Amazon’s retail and logistics operations, a recent Wall Street Journal report informed. As a result of the corporation hiring more employees and expanding its warehouse space than it actually needed in response to the epidemic, Amazon’s consumer division has been experiencing financial difficulties.

But as its Prime Day is coming in July, Amazon might have some good deals ahead. In May, Jassy showed confidence in going back to a solid level of profitability in their consumer sector.

Dave Clark resigned unexpectedly on June 3. His resignation will take effect on July 1st. Clark will take over the leadership of Flexport, a maker of supply chain software.
